Godspeed, a term that means “may you do well” in ol’ English, has entered the modern lexicon of NASCAR in a rather peculiar, yet tangentially funny, way. This week, Homestead-Miami Speedway, home to crowning champions, presents the 4EVER 400 Presented by Mobil 1: no crowns here, just helmets and the promise of an automatic bid to the championship finale.
First out of the gate, punching his ticket to the title race, our homegrown hero Kyle Larson. Now, Larson isn’t just a talented driver; the man knows the game like Shakespeare knew sonnets. After clinching a win at last week’s Las Vegas Motor Speedway opener, all eyes are on him at Homestead-Miami. “It ain’t over ’till it’s over” Lenny Kravitz wasn’t singing about NASCAR, but he might as well have been.
Parade alongside Larson are three other titans: William Byron, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex Jr. You could make an action movie with this ensemble, but let’s not tread into Michael Bay territory. With that 2017 victory and those three nail-biting runner-up finishes, Truex conveys a simple idea: “Recent success is always important.” You know what they say, Truex – success breeds success!
But our story doesn’t end here. Open up the floodgates for a tide of talent. Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, and Chris Buescher – all closing in. And cut the suspense with a butter knife because we’ve got Martinsville waiting in the wings to close this competition.
With a lot at stake and the stinging scent of the asphalt encircling the drivers, the atmosphere at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be palatable tomorrow. Quotes Denny Hamlin about his top spot: “It’s a track I feel good about.” Hamlin failed to secure a top-10 position six times in 18 starts – statistics boding well for our seasoned competitor. Conversely, Truex remains optimistic, “I feel like we can make something happen”. Remember, folks. Optimists didn’t build the ark; realists did.
Contrasting Hamlin’s record at Homestead-Miami, we have the new adrenaline; Byron. His 2021 victory, leading a whopping 102 laps was remarkably achieved, starting from the 31st slot. It only goes to say that there’s no such thing as a bad starting point in NASCAR.
So, here’s to another day of racing, gentlemen, in a world of helmets and heartbeats. Homestead-Miami Speedway, we’re coming for you!
All in all, settle down, sit in the pit, and prepare for another electrifying race day. To pulling G-forces and blazing gloriously under the Miami sun – Godspeed, gentlemen, may this one be for the annals.
