Byron’s Last-Lap Brilliance: A Masterclass in Timing
In motorsports, it’s often said that it’s not about how you start but how you finish. William Byron, the 25-year-old Charlotte native, exemplified this adage during Sunday’s AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Byron, who had been relatively quiet for most of the race, suddenly emerged as the man of the moment. With only six laps remaining, he took the lead on a restart and managed to hold off a determined field to clinch a victory. This wasn’t just any win—it marked a historic 300th victory for the championship Hendrick Motorsports organization, setting a new record for the most wins by a NASCAR Cup Series team.
Interestingly, those final six laps were the only ones Byron led throughout the day. However, his impeccable timing during the final restart allowed him to overtake 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace, who had been leading for 111 laps in his No. 23 Toyota. Despite his dominant performance, Wallace had to settle for third behind Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain.
Byron, reflecting on his victory, acknowledged the efforts of his teammate, Kyle Larson, who had a mishap while leading with just 20 laps to go. “Kyle really deserved this one,” Byron admitted. “But it was awesome getting this car to the front. My Liberty University Chevrolet was just tight back in traffic but had a good pace. It was a grind-it-out day, and our team was there at the end.”
As for the significance of the 300th win, Byron couldn’t hide his joy. “I was such a Hendrick Motorsports fan growing up, watching Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Just thankful for all the men and women back at Hendrick Motorsports. This is awesome.”
While Byron’s victory is a testament to his skill and the prowess of Hendrick Motorsports, it also serves as a reminder: in racing, it’s not just about leading—it’s about when you lead.
