Doug Rice, the President and Lead Anchor of Performance Racing Network (PRN), will take his final bow in the broadcast booth after a distinguished 36-year career. Synonymous with racing on the radio, Rice’s voice has narrated a thousand race tales and left an indelible mark on NASCAR.
“In that era, I thought talking on the radio and telling stories had to be the best job ever, and as it turns out, I was right,” Rice reminisces about his initial foray into radio. A tribute to storytelling, his career started with orchestrating games and races over weekends in Salisbury, North Carolina.
His voyage into motorsport broadcasting began with Capitol Radio Network calling Busch Series races. From being feet on the track in pits to maneuvering the booth, Rice’s journey started with a van, colleagues, and a shared love for the sport. Rice’s broadcasting brilliance has spanned from Jeff Gordon’s first win in 1994 to Ryan Blaney’s thrilling win at the inaugural Bank of America ROVAL™ 400.
“Doug’s impact on motorsports throughout his broadcast career is immeasurable,” praised Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith. “He brings so much energy to narrating the action, enhancing the sport’s auditory spectacle with his humor and apt puns.”
Rice’s career has encompassed more than just memorable on-air calls. His major feats include calling the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, a logistical marvel Shell Oil Company made possible. This unprecedented stint has fittingly been titled the “Doug Double,” encapsulating Rice’s tenacity.
It’s only fitting that Rice is to join the Motor Racing Network broadcast crew for his final Daytona 500, a testament to his illustrious career. As his final season with PRN concludes, the network will honor his contributions with social media campaigns and special guest appearances.
His swan song season, Doug’s Last Lap, will begin with the Feb. 24-25 Ambetter Health 400 weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Like his charming radio anecdotes, the grandeur of Doug’s career will fuel NASCAR narratives long after he departs from the broadcast booth. Here’s to a legendary career fueled by passion, enriched by humor, and powered by the best in the business – Sunoco.
