INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004 - Gil de Ferran received the BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy on Jan. 14 in Dearborn, Mich., in honor of winning the 87th Indianapolis 500.

Penske Corp. Executive Vice President Walter Czarnecki accepted the BorgWarner Team Owner's Trophy on behalf of Penske Racing owner Roger Penske, who was unable to attend the 2004 Automotive News World Congress Gala Dinner.

BorgWarner Chairman and CEO Tim Manganello presented de Ferran and Czarnecki with the awards, which are replicas of the Borg-Warner Trophy awarded annually to the Indianapolis 500 winner.

"Up until tonight, the Borg-Warner Trophy was just a picture in my mind," de Ferran said. "Now I have my own to take home with me, and I'll have it forever. The Indy 500 is indeed 'the big one,' and it feels great."

De Ferran earned his first Indianapolis 500 victory by .2990 of a second over Marlboro Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves. De Ferran retired as a driver after the 2003 Indy Racing League(R) IndyCar(R) Series season.

This was Penske's 13th Indianapolis 500 victory as a team owner, extending his record. Penske Racing drivers have won at Indy three years in a row, with Castroneves triumphing in 2001-02.

The sterling silver Driver's Trophy, known as the "Baby Borg," is 14 inches high and weighs 5 pounds. The black marble base includes space for a handcrafted, 2-inch, 3-dimensional sterling silver image of the winning driver's face.

BorgWarner established the Championship Driver's Trophy in 1988 so each winner of the Indianapolis 500 would have a lasting keepsake of the Speedway victory. The Borg-Warner Trophy stays on display in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

The Team Owner's Trophy, established in 1998, is a replica of the Indianapolis 500 trophy, but has a band of art-deco racing cars accentuated in gold to symbolize the importance of teamwork in auto racing and the automotive business.
