Cheever To Auction Off Team Memorabilia for Charity
Cheever Racing partners with online collectibles auction website (GoMotorBids.com) to offer race fans and collectors the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind racing memorabilia, benefiting ALS Charity. Grandview, MO (PRWEB) September 21, 2006) -– Indy 500 Champion Eddie Cheever is parting with many treasures from his race shop in Indianapolis, Indiana, to raise funding and awareness for the Brian’s Wish Foundation. Simultaneously, he’s giving race fans the opportunity to own pieces of racing history and rare collectibles that have never before been made available to the general public. Cheever Racing, who campaigns racing teams in both the IRL IndyCar Series and the Grand American Rolex Sports Car series, has teamed with the online collectibles auction website GoMotorBids.com to auction off one-of-a-kind pieces of race-used memorabilia such as team and driver uniforms which have been part of the Cheever Racing corporate collection for many years.

The net proceeds from all auctions will be donated to The Brian's Wish Foundation, which was established in honor of Brian Hall. Hall was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at the age of 33, and succumbed to it in May of 2002. His final wish was to make the world more knowledgeable about ALS, and the effects the terminal disease has on the patient, family, caregivers and friends, and therefore to help provide more interest and funding for research facilities to find a cure for this terrible disease. Hall was a huge fan of Indy Car Racing, and specifically of Eddie Cheever. Shortly after Cheever's Indy 500 victory, Hall was able to personally meet him, and the two became friends. At the same time, Cheever became an advocate for the Foundation. The entire Indy Racing League followed suit and the foundation has now been embraced by the majority of teams, who continue to show their support via fundraisers such as this auction.

“I never feel like we are doing enough to keep Brian’s dream of finding a cure for ALS moving forward. This auction is our way to keep the ball rolling and to encourage people to give. If we all do a little then we will be successful. I think that is the legacy that Brian wanted to leave with us,” Eddie Cheever said.

All of the Cheever Racing auctions will have a starting bid of $1, with no minimum reserve prices. In addition, each item will be accompanied by a special Certificate of Authenticity which is designed to counter forgeries. “We were really overwhelmed by Cheever’s dedication to The Brian’s Wish Foundation,” said GoMotorBids.com marketing director Russ Dickey, “and we’re honored that he chose us as his official auction house in his mission to support it.”

This partnership marks the latest in a long list of high-profile racing organizations to partner with GoMotorBids.com in auctioning their unique items. For more information on the Cheever Racing auctions and to view the first batch of items up for bid, visit the homepage at (GoMotorBids.com).

Hornish Wins Third-Quarter Driver's Award
IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. topped third-quarter voting for the Driver of the Year Award. A previous quarterly winner in voting by a nationwide panel of print and broadcast journalists, he is a front-runner for the year-end award selected in a separate vote. "That's some exciting news," said Hornish, who secured his third series title in a tiebreaker over 2005 champion Dan Wheldon. Hornish, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion, won three of the eight races in the quarter. He also had second- and third-place finishes. Hornish received nine first-place votes and totaled 115 points. NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Kevin Harvick was second in the balloting with 81 points. "Obviously, it's been a great year with a few exceptions," said Hornish, who will receive a trophy and Maurice Lacroix wrist watch. "It shows the great teamwork at Marlboro Team Penske."

Dominguez Joins Rocketsports Racing
Rocketsports Racing has three factors that add to the equation which should equal better results at Road America for the team: a race win, a veteran Champ Car driver, and a driver who has previous history of top success in various racecars. This event will mark the third time that Rocketsports will take their Champ Car operation to the challenging road course in the rolling hills of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Their first appearance was with Alex Tagliani back in 2003. Starting on the grid in the 13th spot, the team earned a podium finish with a third place result. When they returned in 2004, Tagliani and the team took the car all the way to the top, earning the team's first victory after starting in the 13th spot once again. Seeing that 13 is usually an unlucky number, Rocketsports was able to change the superstitious number into a positive one that saw them finish in the top-three in both of their past efforts.

This year, the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series returns to Road America after a one-year hiatus. Rocketsports remains the defending race winners and will do their best with drivers Mario Dominguez and Tonis Kasemets this weekend to continue their podium-finishing streak at this venue.

It was announced on Monday that Dominguez would be joining the team and driving the #8 Pemex/Rocketsports Ford-Cosworth/Lola/Bridgestone for the remaining three races left on the 2006 Champ Car schedule. He will make his debut with the team this weekend in Road America, and will be reunited with his former engineer Brian Ma, whom he had worked with previously back when he was driving at Herdez Competition (now known as CTE Racing/HVM). Together the two earned Dominguez's best starting position at Road America in 2003 when he qualified fifth. Ma joined Rocketsports in 2004 and brought the team their first win at the Road America event when was the lead engineer on Tagliani's car.

Bourdais Nears Historic Third Straight Title
When Sebastien Bourdais claimed his first Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford title, he clinched on the final day of the 2004 season by romping to a win in Mexico City. He locked up his second title on the next-to-last race of the 2005 season, finishing off the title chase in style again, taking victory on the streets of Surfers Paradise, Australia. Now the legend-in-the-making has a chance to do what only one other man in all of American open-wheel racing has ever done, as Bourdais has a record-tying third consecutive Champ Car World Series title in his sights as the series heads to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the 12th race of the Champ Car season. Bourdais could match Ted Horn as the only driver in series history to win three straight Champ Car crowns, and could do so simply by scoring eight more points than both A.J. Allmendinger and Justin Wilson at this weekend’s Champ Car Grand Prix of Road America.

If Bourdais can earn the maximum 35 championship points available this weekend, something he did at the series’ last race in Montreal, then Allmendinger or Wilson would have to finish second and lead a lap in order to prevent Bourdais from hoisting the Vanderbilt Cup at the end of the day. Under the current Champ Car points system, with five separate bonus points available for various performances, both Wilson and Allmendinger could keep themselves alive in the hunt for the championship simply by finishing ahead of the Frenchman. Bourdais has been strong in his previous two visits to the 4.048-mile classic Road America layout, starting on the front row and finishing on the podium both in 2003 and in ‘04, but has yet to win at Elkhart Lake. His Newman/Haas Racing team has had more than a little success there however, capturing Road America wins with Mario and Michael Andretti, Cristiano da Matta, Christian Fittipaldi and Bruno Junqueira.

New Champ Car In Final Test
The new DP01 Champ Car had just finished the last of its 2,500 testing miles on a muggy Friday in Sebring when driver Roberto Moreno realized that there was one final test that the next-generation Champ Car had yet to pass. “When you win a race, there is one more thing that you need your car to be able to do,” Moreno grinned. -- So after getting the high sign from the test team, Moreno got two last gallons of methanol poured into his tank and launched out of his stall, ran to the end of Pit Lane and proceeded to become the first driver to turn victory donuts in the DP01 Champ Car.

The smoky celebration put an emphatic point on three long weeks of testing in Sebring that saw the new DP01 turn more than 2,500 miles on the Sebring International Raceway short course. Moreno piloted the new car for each and every one of those miles, testing every component of the new car through a rigorous schedule designed to ensure the reliability of the machine before the DP01 gets delivered to the teams.

“The car has performed exactly as we expected it to when we designed this test schedule,” said Champ Car Technical Director Scot Elkins. “We were really hard on this car and did a lot of things to it that teams won’t do when they get it. We wanted to make sure we are giving the teams a car they can have confidence in, and I feel that we have done that.”

The end of the testing program put a capper on a long three weeks for the test team that feverishly worked on the DP01 prototype, braving rain, wind and extreme temperatures to keep the car on the track. Engineers from Champ Car, Elan Motorsports, Pi Research, Cosworth Racing, Performance Racing Brakes, Hewland Gearboxes and Bridgestone all spent the three weeks in Sebring making sure the car was ready to answer the bell for each and every test day. “I can’t say enough about the job these guys did here,” Elkins said of his team. “There were some pretty tough conditions out here and you can lose focus doing the same thing day after day, but these guys were always ready to do whatever it took to get the job done, and it shows.”

The car will now head back to Indianapolis to prepare for its public on-track debut, which will take place next weekend at Road America. The car will run demonstration laps on Friday and Saturday, and will also serve as part of the pace-car team leading the pre-race parade laps prior to Sunday’s Champ Car Grand Prix of Road America. Fans can watch the race live on SPEED, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, September 24.
